Seven steps to self-direction
Overview
A workbook focused on achieving successful self-directed support arrangements by fostering a right relationship between people with disability, their families, friends and paid support workers. Self direction is the opportunity to have control over your decisions to determine the course of your own life. For people with disability this includes directing how they are supported and by whom.
The core idea is based on the ethic of providing support "with" the person with disability rather than "on" or "to" them. The guide is structured around seven strategic steps intended to build trust, solve problems and increase the resilience of the person being supported.
The Seven Steps to Self-Direction
- Step 1: Start with the person
- Step 2: Develop the vision and plan
- Step 3: Make a good match
- Step 4: Learn to support the person well
- Step 5: Build a relationship of trust
- Step 6: Solve problems quickly, locally and creatively
- Step 7: Check for resilience
