Customised Employment explainer for employers

Overview

Customised Employment is a mutually beneficial employment relationship between an employee with a disability and their employer. The relationship is based on the specific contributions of an employee that meet identified areas of benefit to an employer. This guide helps when preparing for an initial meeting with an employer/potential employer. It describes Customised Employment, as well as provides ideas on how to introduce the person using a visual resume.

Customised Employment starts with the strong fundamental principle that everyone can work in typical, paid employment; however, people with complex disabilities are often disadvantaged by traditional job-seeking practices. This approach looks at the contributions of the person, rather than how they compare to others so rather than responding to a job opening or job description, a person is supported to obtain a unique role created within a business that matches their unique interests and skills.

There are three stages of the Customised Employment Process:

  1. Discovery
  2. Job Development
  3. Job Site Supports
