Customised Employment

Overview

Customised Employment is an approach that starts with the person rather than the job. Time is spent identifying a person’s unique interests and potential contributions and this information is used to tailor a job role. This resource describes the key aspects of Customised Employment including the benefits and supports that employers can anticipate through this approach.

Customised Employment is a negotiated employment relationship based on the specific contributions of a jobseeker that meet specific areas of benefit to employers. Instead of starting with a job vacancy, a person is supported to find a job that matches their unique interests and skills. It is an effective way to support people with high support needs.

The aim of the approach is to create meaningful work roles that suit both the person with disability and their employer.

There are three phases of Customised Employment:

  1. Discovery
  2. Job Development
  3. On-site Job Support

This resource includes a short information sheet on Customised Employment, a short information sheet for employers and an explainer video with transcript.
