What is neurodivergence?

Overview

A short accessible information sheet that defines key terms relating to neurodivergence and addresses some common misconceptions. It is accompanied by practical information sheets on supporting neurodivergent children and young people. 

The aim is to enhance readers’ basic neurodivergence literacy, lay the groundwork for further learning and promote informed discussions about neurodiversity. The information provides guidance on understanding and accommodating two common areas of difference for neurodivergent children and young people: neurocognitive functioning and sensory processing.

  1. What is neurodivergence – defines key terms relating to neurodivergence and addresses some common misconceptions.
  2. Supporting sensory processing for neurodivergent children – introduces sensory processing differences and suggests strategies for working alongside neurodivergent children to understand and accommodate their sensory needs.
  3. Strategies to support neurocognitive functioning for neurodivergent children – introduces neurocognitive functioning and its relevance to neurodivergent children. It also describes some strategies that can be used to support neurocognitive development.
