Transition to adulthood for individuals with complex communication needs: a scoping review

Overview

A scoping review of existing research documenting the available evidence on the transition to adulthood occupations for youth with complex communication needs and those who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Examples of AAC tools are gestures, body language, manual signs, communication boards with graphic symbols and mobile technologies with AAC apps.

The review finds factors enabling successful transition include organisational support, transition-focused programs and social support networks. Barriers include low expectations, lack of supportive programs and limited literacy skills. This review highlights the need for future studies to focus on programs and services supporting occupational participation and exploring long-term outcomes.
