Australia’s disability strategy 2021–2031: 2024 update

Overview

Australia’s disability strategy 2021–2031 (the Strategy) is Australia’s national disability policy framework. It sets out a plan for continuing to improve the lives of people with disability in Australia over ten years. 

A review and update of the Strategy was recommended by the 2023 Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. This update is focused on practical process, governance and reporting improvements, and addressing key gaps or missing elements.

Highlights of the update

  • In 2025 a Community Engagement Plan will be developed in partnership with people with disability to encourage broader participation.
  • Governments have committed to implementing three new targeted action plans over the next three years. The plans will focus on:
    • building more inclusive homes and communities
    • improving safety, rights, and justice, and
    • changing community attitudes.
  • A new Associated Plan for increasing accessible information and communication will be developed.
  • The Strategy now includes a new policy priority focused on addressing homelessness.
  • The refreshed Strategy includes a commitment to improving the Strategy’s data and reporting.

This update is accompanied by a targeted action plans for community attitudes, inclusive homes and communities, and safety, rights and justice, as well as a data improvement plan and a guide to applying the Strategy.
