The intersection of technology, disability rights, and worker rights
Overview
People with disabilities often face more barriers when looking for work or using workplace technology. Today, many employers use new tools to manage workers and make decisions. These tools include artificial intelligence (AI), surveillance technology and robotics. These tools can help make jobs more accessible. But they can also cause problems if they are not built or used fairly. For example, they can make it harder for disabled workers to get hired, or they can collect private data without permission.
This study looked at how these technologies affect people with disability and how problems get worse for people who face more than one kind of unfair treatment—like being both disabled and part of a racial minority. The report recommends stronger protections for workers and better laws. It also says companies and tech developers should include disabled people when they design tools. Everyone involved in workplace technology—employers, lawmakers, and researchers—should make sure the tools help people instead of hurting them.
