Recruitment of people with intellectual disability

Overview

The VALID Employment Project explored how to support people with intellectual disabilities at every stage of employment. Over one year, 20 people with intellectual disabilities in open employment and 12 managers were interviewed to find out what makes an inclusive workplace. These interviews, held in early 2020, revealed practical strategies and highlighted the positive impact of employing people with intellectual disabilities.

The project produced case studies, such as Inclusive Meetings and Making Supervision Super Helpful, plus videos and easy-read guides to help employers create inclusive workplaces. It proves that meaningful inclusion is possible and benefits both employees and employers.

This resource gives employers simple, practical tips to make recruitment fair and accessible. From writing clear job ads and sharing interview questions early, to offering workplace adjustments and linking with disability employment service providers it’s all about opening doors and supporting people with intellectual disability to succeed at work.
