Overview
All of us at some time will rely on the people in our lives to help navigate barriers to employment.
For some people with disability – especially those with cognitive disability – friends and family may take on roles such as:
- looking for jobs and talking with employers
- supporting work preparation
- building skills such as independent travel to and from work
- helping with training and tasks when starting a job
- keeping track of work times and rosters
- assisting with money, banking or legal matters related to work.1 2
The network of supporters should be actively engaged and well-supported. They need clear information, access to guidance, peer support, mentoring and training to help the person find and keep a job. Strong communication among all parties, guided by the person’s preferences and goals, is essential.
Key strategies for success
- identify the key supporters in the person’s life
- build a clear plan for roles and responsibilities
- support the supporters through information, mentoring, peer support and training
- coordinate the team around the person.
