Linking to supports

Putting the right supports in place before job searching begins will help to create the conditions for successful job placement.

Overview

Building conditions for successful job placement often requires action beyond the workplace by building a strong support network. This involves connecting the person to the right, high-quality and well-coordinated supports that can address any health, wellbeing, personal and vocational needs. These supports can include family, friends and community-based services, ideally all working together.

A critical first step is ensuring a person is connected to appropriate supports that help them prepare for, enter and sustain employment. These supports may address health, wellbeing, personal circumstances, or vocational and employment needs. Evidence shows that when jobseekers with disability are connected to high-quality, coordinated supports, this can positively impact employment outcomes and create sustainable support systems that continue beyond job placement.1 2

Key strategies for success

Putting the right supports in place involves exploring both the person’s existing supports as well as considering any gaps in support or specialist supports that might be provided by community or specialist services.
