Overview

Employers are key partners in making return to work successful for a person recovering from illness or injury. Research shows that the best results happen when employers improve communication between workers and colleagues, provide information about worker rights, keep updated about the health progress and return plans of workers, coordinate with healthcare providers and insurers and allow workers to attend medical appointments during business hours.1

Key strategies for success

Key strategies for employment and rehabilitation services to support return to work include:

  • supporting active communication between the workplace and health care services to ensure everyone is working towards the same goal of getting the person back to work safely
  • encouraging employer involvement in the return to work process through actions like maintaining contact with their staff member and being involved in the planning for the return to work
  • identifying different career opportunities in cases where a worker cannot return to their old job due to their injury or condition.
